About

PHIX is a non-profit founded by El Paso health leaders in 2010 to improve health through collaboration and data technology.

PHIX facilitates data sharing between hospitals, emergency departments, clinics, public health, laboratories, imaging centers, and other health providers. This data sharing is supported by health information exchange technology.

Through our clinical viewer, providers can review their patients’ records from across the PHIX network. Having access to medical records securely and electronically at the point of care drives value by improving outcomes, reducing readmissions, and reducing repeat imaging, labs, and diagnostic procedures.

PHIX also leverages our health information exchange technology and data to respond to local needs.

ABOUT US

PHIX is a 501(c)3 non-profit founded by El Paso health leaders in 2010 to improve health through collaboration and data technology. PHIX is based in El Paso, TX and serves providers and patients in west Texas and southern New Mexico.

PHIX facilitates data sharing between hospitals, emergency departments, clinics, public health, laboratories, imaging centers, other health providers and social service organizations.

Our approach to data sharing is unique. We leverage local programmers to support custom integrations with each partner. This approach enables PHIX to connect with a wide variety of partners – large and small. This flexibility also enables PHIX to connect with all types of health care partners as well as organizations providing social services.

Additional Info

Clinical Viewer

Through PHIX’s clinical viewer, providers can access their patient’s health records from across the community securely and electronically. Data shared includes diagnoses, lab results, radiology reports, pathology reports, immunizations, medications, and other clinical notes. Clinical notes include different types of physician and nurse notes. For example: discharge summaries, admission history and physicals, progress notes, and consult notes.

Notifications

PHIX can notify providers when their patients are in the hospital or emergency department to support care coordination and timely follow-up visit.

PHIXmail

PHIX’s secure messaging enables our partners to send and receive health information electronically. To reduce the burden of checking multiple inboxes, PHIX sends a regular email and/or text message when you receive a new secure message via PHIXmail.

Lab Ordering and Results

In March 2020, PHIX developed a COVID19 lab ordering and results system to transition the City of El Paso from a paper-based ordering and result process to an electronic system. Today, this system has expanded and continues to support the COVID-19 response more broadly. It is currently used by the City of El Paso Department of Public Health Laboratory, private laboratories, and drive-thru testing sites. Through this system, PHIX pushes positive COVID19 results directly to the City of El Paso Department of Epidemiology. This electronic notification process supports timely case investigations and contact tracing. Additionally, patients at City COVID19 testing sites are notified of their COVID19 results securely by email and/or text.

Vaccine Information Exchange

PHIX developed a vaccination system that includes safety checks, rapid demographic data collection, and electronic reporting to the Texas immunization registry (ImmTrac). This system was created to support the COVID19 vaccine roll-out and has since been adapted to support other types of vaccinations as well.

Trauma Image Sharing

Local physicians told PHIX that they needed a secure way to share radiology images before or during a trauma transfer instead of waiting for a CD of images to arrive with the patient. PHIX developed a secure system for pushing radiology images electronically. This system notifies the trauma team when the images are available.

Closed-Loop Referrals

PHIX developed a closed-loop referral system that enables referring providers to pre-fill and send electronic referrals. Specialists receive referrals electronically and have an electronic referral management system. When the patient is seen by the specialist, the referring provider receives an alert that clinical details are available for review securely. PHIX is currently piloting this system with specialists and diabetes education programs to support the prevention and management of diabetes. This initiative is generously funded by the Paso del Norte Health Foundation.
